¾ cup shortening
1 ½ cups sugar
1 egg
3 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1 cup chopped dates
Powdered sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and beat thoroughly. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda together. Add alternately with milk to creamed mixture. Fold in nuts and dates. Pour into 2 greased cookie sheets, about 8 by 12-inch. Bake at 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes. Cut into bars 1 by 4-inches. When still warm, roll in powdered sugar store in tightly covered container.
