2 cups rolled oats
1 cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup white sugar
1 cup flour
¼ tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
¼ cup hot water
½ cup shortening, melted and cooled
1 tsp vanilla
raisins or nuts, optional

Directions:
Directions:
1. Heat oven to 350º.
2. Mix together oats, sugars, flour and salt. Set aside.
3. Dissolve the baking soda in the hot water. Add to it the cooled melted shortening and vanilla.
4. Stir dry ingredients into the liquid mixture. Blend well.
5. Add raisins or nuts if desired. Shape dough into walnut sized balls. Place on greased cookie sheet.
6. Bake for about 10 minutes.
