1 stick butter, melted
1 c. packed brown sugar
2 T. Karo (light) or other corn syrup

1 loaf of French or Italian bread sliced about 1 inch thick

5 lg. eggs
1 c. half and half
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. orange liqueur (optional); you can substitute orange zest or almond flavoring
pinch of salt

The night before you want to serve this:

Melt butter in a heavy saucepan, add brown sugar and corn syrup and stir until smooth. Pour into a 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Trim crusts from bread slices and arrange in one layer (squeezing them in together). Whisk remaining ingredients until well combined. Pour evenly over the bread slices. Cover and chill at least 8 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 and bring bread mixture to room temperature. Bake uncovered until puffed and edges are beginning to brown; about 30 to 40 minutes.

Serve with warm maple syrup.
