1 ½ cups brown sugar
½ cup shortening

3 tsp. cocoa in ½ cup boiling water

2 eggs (yolks first, whites well-beaten last)
½ cup sweet milk

2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar

1 tsp. vanilla
pinch of salt

Directions:
Directions:
Combine cocoa and boiling water to dissolve. Separate the yolks from the egg whites. Beat the egg whites.

Cream shortening, brown sugar and eggs--adding the yolks first and then the well-beaten egg whites. Add ½ cup sweet milk (whole milk). Sift the dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture by alternating with the cocoa mixture. Add 1 tsp. vanilla.

Bake at 350º for 30 minutes
