Ingredients: 6 c sifted flour 4 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1 1/2 c shortening 3 c brown sugar 2 eggs, well beaten 2 tsp vanilla
Variations: Chocolate -- Add 2 oz (squares) chocolate, melted, to 1 portion of the dough. Blend well. Coconut -- Add 1/3 c shredded coconut to 1 portion Fruit -- Add 1/3 c chopped dates, raisins, currants, dried apricots, prunes, or figs to 1 portion. Mix well. Nut -- Add 1/3 c of finely chopped almonds, pecans, peanuts, Brazil nuts, or walnuts to 1 portion of dough. Mix well Spice -- Add 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp nutmeg to 1 portion of the dough. Mix well.

Directions:Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and flavoring and mix well. Add dry ingredients. Divide dough into 6 equal portions. Leave 1 plain and make variations of remaining dough. Shape each piece of dough into a roll. Chill. When firm slice very thin and bake in moderate oven (375º) 10 - 12 minutes. |
