1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/2 cp boiling water
2/3 cp shortening
1 3/4 cp sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs2 1/4 cps unsifted all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/3 cps buttermilk or sour milk (sour milk - use 4 tsp vinegar plus enough milk to equal 1 1/3 cups)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350. Grease well and flour three 8" or two 9" layer ans; set aside. In small bowl, stir together cocoa and boiling water until smooth; set aside.

In large mixer bowl, cream shortening, sugar and vanilla until blended. Add eggs; beat well. Combine flour =, baking soda and salt; add alternatively with buttermilk to creamed mixture. Beat in cocoa mixture. Pour into prepared pans. Bake 25-30 minutes for 8" pans or 35-40 minutes for 9" pans or until cake tester comes out clean. Cool 20-25 minutes. Remove from pans and cool. Frost as desired.
