½ cup unsalted butter
1⅓ cups icing sugar, sifted

Warm the butter in a bowl. Beat with whisk until light and fluffy. Gradually add confectioners sugar until it is all incorporated. Finished buttercream is thicker and stiffer than whipped cream, but very light and pale.
Chocolate: 1 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder or 2 oz. cooled melted chocolate (mix in cooled melted chocolate; this will give a smoother texture than unsweetened cocoa powder)
Vanilla: ½ tsp. vanilla extract
Lemon: 1 tsp. lemon juice with a little finely grated lemon zest (if the buttercream is to be piped)
Orange: ½ tbsp. orange juice with a little finely grated orange zest
Coffee: 1 heaped tbsp. instant coffee dissolved in ½ tsp. hot water
Mocha: 1 tsp. cocoa powder and 1 tsp. instant coffee
Mint: 2 drops peppermint oil and green food coloring
