3 - 4 fresh Bartlett pears
2 cups all purpose flour
2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup water
2 eggs
1 cup dates, chopped

Directions:
Directions:
Peel, halve, core and dice enough pears to make 2 cups. Combine in mixing bowl, flour, sugar, baking powder,
baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix well. Add shortening, water and diced pears. Beat until smooth.
Add eggs and beat 2 more minutes. Stir in dates. Pour into greased 9 X 13" pan.
Bake at 350 F for 45 - 50 minutes.

This is delicious served warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
