Filling:
2-1/2 cups chopped dates
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup chopped pecans

Simmer together until dates are soft (about 10 minutes). Let cool.

Dough:
1 cup butter
2 cups brown sugar
3 eggs (well beaten)
4-1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp soda
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Mix in beaten eggs. Add flour to which salt and soda has been added. Chill dough. Divide in half. Roll each half into a rectangle. Spread with half of the filling. Roll up with wax paper and let set in refrigerator overnight or you can freeze. Slice into 1/2" thick slices and bake in 350 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes.
