Base layer:
4 oz (1/2 cup) margarine or butter
2 oz (1/4 cup) white sugar
1 cup flour

Toffee layer:
4 oz (1/2 cup) margarine or butter
4 oz (1/2 cup) white sugar
2 tbsp Lyons golden syrup
small tin evaporated milk (1/2 cup)

Top layer:
4 oz (1/2 cup) semi sweet baking chocolate or chocolate chips
(if you like an extra thick layer of chocolate - just melt more!)

note from Lynne: a little dab of butter also helps it to melt and spread more easily

Directions:

Pre-heat oven to 350

Bottom layer:
Cream together butter and sugar and then add flour
Press into a flat cookie tray
Bake for 15 minutes

Toffee layer:
Bring to a boil in a heavy saucepan on medium heat. Boil for ~3 minutes, stirring constantly (until tacky)
Remove from heat and stir vigorously for 1 more minute.
Spread evenly over the cooled base
Let it stand to set/cool down for at least 30 minutes before adding the next layer

Top layer:
Heat the chocolate and butter in a small heavy saucepan on very low heat until almost melted.
Remove from heat and stir until smooth. Spread evenly over the second layer.
