In your magic bowl, you dump in the right amount of flour. Pour in some baking powder, salt, an egg, a little sugar, and lastly some oil. Mix together .... ........ .
OH! You don't have a magic bowl. I had one once ... ............

When Jeannie was small, she asked me how I could make things like pancakes and pie dough without a recipe. I had been using the same bowl to mix up these things for a long time, and after a while you just know how much is right. Being busy and not having much patience to explain, I told her the bowl was magic. I never gave it another thought.

However, one Saturday morning she got up before me. I woke to her crying beside my bed. I quickly asked what was wrong (I knew Jeannie, and it could be anything from the loss of her favorite book to having cut her foot off) She said through snuffles and sobs, "I'll never have pancakes again!" That set off another howl. After again calming her down till speech was possible, I asked, "Why can't you have pancakes again?" She looked at me like I was going to choke her and said, "I broke your magic bowl! " It took me getting up, getting out a different bowl (after cleaning up the one she broke) and the cookbook (it didn't look the same) and making pancakes before she would calm down.
