4 cups cranberries, washed and sorted to remove stems, etc
2 tablespoons orange rind (I use a peeler to take off only the orange part of the rind)
6 cinnamon sticks
12 whole cloves
1 quart of orange juice (I buy no pulp for this recipe)
1 cup lemon juice (I buy freshly squeezed lemon juice in the freezer section of the supermarket
1½ cups sugar
2 quarts of water

Directions:

Wash and sort the cranberries.

Combine cranberries, water, orange rind, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a large stockpot; bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes or until cranberries pop.

Strain mixture, discarding pulp.

Stir in remaining ingredients.

Place over medium heat, stirring constantly until sugar dissolves and the mixture is thoroughly heated.

Tree decoration is always accompanied by mugs of this hot, spicy, and colorful concoction. Even in tropical, non-Christmasy Houston, the smell of the punch made us all feel festive. Christmas Eve, during gift opening, was the other occasion which called for the delicious, fragrant drink.
