2 cups sugar
1 cup Crisco
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
4 eggs, separated
2-1/2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 bar German's Sweet Chocolate
1/2 cup boiling water

Directions:
Directions:
Melt chocolate in 1/2 cup boiling water with 1/2 tsp salt. Cool. Cream sugar and Crisco until fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beat well after each. Add flour and 3/4 cup buttermilk alternately, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Dissolve soda in remaining buttermilk, add to mixture. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour into 4 greased and floured layer cake pans. Bake at 350º for about 25 minutes. (Until it pulls away from the pan and tests done.)

1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 cup coconut
1 tsp vanilla
3 egg yolks
1 cup sugar
1 stick margarine or butter

Cook over low heat, stirring, until thickened. Cool. Beat until thick enough to spread on cake.

Aunt Frances and Uncle Richard lived next door to us on Barkley. They had a daughter, Paula, who was about my age. Aunt Frances was friends with Judy (Julie) Roper and that is how I got to be friends with Patti. The Davis's had twin girls younger that Paula before the moved to Odessa. I can still remember Aunt Frances' laugh!
