Ingredients: Buns: 1 cup milk 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup butter 1/4 warm water (105 - 115ºF) 1 pkg active dry yeast 2 eggs 5 1/4 cups unsifted All Purpose flour 1 cup raisins 1/2 cup chopped mixed candied fruit 1 egg yolk
Icing: 1 1/2 cups icing sugar 1 1/2 tsp milk

Directions:In a small saucepan heat milk until bubbles just start to form Remove from heat Add sugar, salt and 1/2 cup butter, stirring until butter is melted Let cool until lukewarm Sprinkle yeast over warm water and stir until dissolved Stir milk mixture into yeast mixture Add eggs and 2 cups of flour and beat with electric mixer until dough is smooth Add remaining flour with wooden spoon, then add raisins and fruit Mix by hand until dough leaves side of bowl Place dough into lightly greased bowl, turning once so greased side is on top Cover bowl with towel and let rise in a warm place until dough doubles in size (about 1 1/2 hours) Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and using palms of hands shape into roll 15 inches long Cut dough crosswise into 15 pieces and shape each into a ball (tuck edges underneath to make smooth top) Arrange buns on greased baking pan 1/2 inch apart, cover with towel and let rise in a warm place until double in bulk Preheat oven to 375ºF Carefully cut a cross in tops of buns (1/3 inch deep) Brush tops of buns with egg yolk mixed with 2 Tblsp water Bake 25-30 minutes (until golden brown) Cool on wire rack Combine icing sugar and milk and drizzle over top of each bun |
