5 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
4 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening (I use butter)
1 c. milk
4 eggs

Lightly beat together eggs and milk. In bowl combine flour, salt and baking powder. Add butter and blend with pastry blender. Add liquid ingredients and mix together. Add more flour as necessary to make a soft (but not sticky) dough that can be easily rolled out. Cut dough into two separate balls. Roll each out on lightly floured surface to about1/8" thickness, sprinkling with flour to prevent sticking. Cut into about 2"x 4" rectangles with a pizza cutter. Cut 2 small slits in center of each. Deep fry in hot fat until golden brown on each side, turning once. Drain on paper towel lined pan.
Variation:
1 c. whipping cream
2 eggs
2 c. flour
1/2 c. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
flour to make a soft dough

This is good served with watermelon, jam, honey or sprinkled with powdered sugar.
This was introduced to me when I was a teenager living in Nooksack, Wa. My family prefers it with watermelon.
