Use a heavy sauce pan

1 can sweetened condensed milk
2 cup sugar
1 cup butter
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup karo syrup
1/3/4 tsp anise extract
1/2 tsp black food coloring (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Put all ingredients into a sauce pan. Cook till 234º , hard stage on candy thermometer. Take off heat and add 1/4 tsp Anise extact. Stir in food coloring if using.
Pour into a 9 X 13 glass pan well greased. Set where cold till you can cut caramels. Cut into 1 X 1/2 inch squares and wrap in waxed paper.
