½ c. shortening creamed with 2 c. brown sugar (if using crisco add a pinch of salt)
2 eggs -mix well
½ c. sour milk or buttermilk (Can use ½ c. sweet milk with ½ - 1 tsp. vinegar
2 c. flour (sifted 2c. & 2 T.)
½ c. hot water mixed with 2 oz. chocolate (Can use ½ c. hot water mixed with ⅓ c. cocoa)
1 tsp. soda dissolved in 2T hot water (add this to the hot water and chocolate mixture)
1 tsp vanilla

Cream shortening with brown sugar. Add eggs and mix well. Alternately add sour milk, flour and soda. Beat well. Then add vanilla. Makes 8 large cup cakes. May use large cake pan or 2 layer cake pans. Bake cup cakes 20 min at 350º. Bake layer cake pans at 350º for 30 min.

This was my Mother's recipe. A note was added to keep flame low in oven. The year 1937 was written on her recipe card. This was a favorite of our family and often requested for a birthday cake especially frosted with caramel icing.
