Cake:
2 cups sugar
1 cup crisco
1 cup thick peach preserves
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup pecans
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 cups all-purpose flour
Pinch of salt

Penuche Icing:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup milk
1-3/4 to 2 cups sifted confectioner's sugar

Cake:
Mix all ingredients and bake in a slow oven.

Penuche Icing:
Melt butter in saucepan. Add brown sugar. Boil over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Stir in milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cool to lukewarm. Gradually add confectioner's sugar. Beat until thick enough to spread. If icing becomes too stiff, add a little hot water.

*I had forgotten all about this cake until I began gathering recipes for this cookbook. Mother used to make this a lot and it was a favorite!!!!
