Directions:Mix sugar, salt and egg yolks. Pour in milk. Cook in double boiler until miture coats the spoon (when you hold the spoon up over the hot mixture, it will stick to the spoon instead of running right off). Cool. Strain.
Add cream and vanilla. Freeze in ice cream freezer.
Jean's comments: Old hand cranked freezer is a lot more work but great fun! Serves 25 to 30 people. |

Notes: After we were first married in 1966, Kenny and Jean began having fish fries at their house. We lined the drive way with chairs and tables. Kenny and Earl were the ones who cranked the ice cream, with help from whoever was willing. I think I remember playing badmitton but can't say that for sure. I know that the fish Kenny caught were awesome. Jean would make homemade hush puppies and we'd all bring dishes to share. That was one of the best memories I have of family gatherings, plus Thanksgiving. It was a time for us all to laugh and talk and be together. Usually all of Mabel's family and ours (except Buddy) would come. I think Charlie's family came and sometimes Uncle Herberts too, although I remember them at other times more than Thanksgiving or fish fries. Kenny was an avid fisherman. Before he died, Todd asked him to see his fishing gear. Todd told him he would like to buy anything he would sell when he was ready. When Kenny died, Jean had me call Todd and he went down and purchased several things. I was thankful that it stayed in the family and was not sold at auction. Matt and Todd both have the same love of fishing that Kenneth and Buddy had. We didn't get any of Buddy's fishing supplies. I hope his children did.
