Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter mounded
1 cup sugar
2 beaten eggs
1/4 cup milk
1 teas vanilla
1 tsp allspice
1 1/2 cups plain flour (If you prefer to use self rising flour, omit salt, baking powder and soda)
1/4 teas salt
1 teas baking powder
3/4 teas baking soda
3/4 cup quick oats (uncooked)

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar, shortening and peanut butter. Add eggs, milk and vanilla. Beat well. Add dry ingredients while mixing, blending well. Stir in oats on low speed.

Drop by spoonfuls on cookie sheet with non stick pad if available. If putting directly on baking sheet, I spray lightly to keep cookies from sticking.

Recipe called for 15 min at 350. Depending on oven, it takes mine more like 8-10 min. Kids always liked the cookies almost mushy. I try not to get too brown on bottom. Some ovens may have to be 325 to bake like the family wants them.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This is the original peanut butter cookie recipe that I have made for over 50 years. It appeared in one of the first homemaker cook books. I don't remember trying it without oats, however the taste should be similar. If substituting self rising flour, leave out salt, baking powder and soda.

This is one of the only things I actually made by myself before we got married. I either did not have time or was not invited to cook with Mom very often. She was very particular about her cooking. I don't think I met her standards.
