1 and 3/4 cups dates, pitted and chopped
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup boiling water
1/3 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 and 1/8 cups self-rising flour

Caramel Sauce:
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup butter
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease an 8-inch baking dish.
In bowl, combine dates and baking soda, and pour hot water over to just cover.
Cream 1/3 cup butter with sugar, then beat in eggs.
Add flour and date mixture to egg mixture and fold to combine.
Pour batter into baking dish.
Bake 30-40 minutes and let cool slightly.
Make Sauce: Combine brown sugar, 1/3 cup butter and evaporated milk in saucepan.
Cook over medium heat to a boil.
Turn heat down and simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and add vanilla.
Pour sauce over individual servings of warm cake.
