2 lbs. hamburger
1 lb.medium sausage
2 eggs
1 minced onion
1 diced green pepper
1 can diced tomatoes
1 cup oatmeal
1 tblsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1 cup cracker crumbs (if needed)

Meatloaf topping
1/2 half cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. ground mustard
1 tblsp. vinegar

Directions:

1. Mix first 8 items together. If mixture is too moist add cracker crumbs as needed.
2. Form two large mounds of mixture and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove from oven. Combine topping ingredients together and brush on top of meatloafs. Return to oven and bake an additional 20-30 minutes or until mixture carmelizes on top.

In later years Mom would top the meatloaf with bacon. It is good with bacon too but my favorite is the topping that Mom always made. In the 1940’s you couldn’t buy all the sauces you can today because they weren’t available. Mom used that topping recipe for meatloaf and also for hot sauce she would make by adding peppers and spices.
