2 CUPS SUGAR
1/2 CUP SHORTENING
1/2 CUP BUTTER
2 EGGS
1/2 CUP DARK MOLASSES
4 CUPS FLOUR
2 TSP CINNAMON
1 TSP GINGER
1 TSP CLOVES
1 TSP NUTMEG
1 TSP SODA
14 TSP SALT

ICING
1 BOX CONFECTIONERS SUGAR
3 TABLESPOONS MERINGUE POWDER
1/3 CUP WATER
BEAT TOGETHER

CREAM SUGAR AND SHORTENING AND BUTTER. STIR IN EGGS, ONE AT A TIME.
STIR IN MOLASSES
STIR DRY INGREDIENTS INTO THE WET MIXTURE.
MIX UNTIL THOROUGHLY BLENDED.
ROLL INTO A BALL AND PUT IN ZIP LOCK BAG AND CHILL IN REFRIGERATOR FOR AT LEAST 3 HOURS.

ROLL OUT TO 1/4 INCH THICKNESS AND CUT WITH COOKIE CUTTERS.
PLACE ON GREASED COOKIE SHEET AND BAKE AT 325º FOR 10 TO 12 MINUTES.
FROST WITH ICING.

The Gingerbread cookie recipe is from the early 1970s Junior League of Chicago Cookbook, Soupçon. These cookies can be frosted with a traditional ornamental or confectioners sugar frosting.
