"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 c. Cornmeal
2 c. Rye Flour
1 t. Salt
1 t. Baking Soda
2 T. Boiling Water
3 c. Sour Milk
1 c. Molasses

Directions:
Directions:
Mix dry ingredients (except Baking Soda) together in a large bowl. Set aside. In another bowl mix Baking Soda with Boiling Water and stir until dissolved. Add Milk and Molasses. Pour wet ingredients into dry ones and stir to form a soft batter.
Pour into greased mold or large coffee can and cover with a tight lid or aluminum foil tied with string. Either way, it should be 2/3 full.
Place in a pot of boiling water and boil for 5 hours checking water occasionally to make sure it doesn't boil dry.

Note: This may not take 5 hours as Mrs. Lewis wrote it. Many modern recipes I have seen take 2 hours. It should be done when a toothpick inserted into it comes out clean.

Cool and remove from can or mold and serve.
