3 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup sugar
½ cup Crisco or other shortening
¼ cup butter or margarine
⅔ cup milk

(Optional 1 teaspoon Vanilla)

Directions:
Directions:
1. Combine dry ingredients and rub in shortening until the mixture looks like grains of rice.

2. Add milk gradually, just enough to make dough soft. Set aside excess milk for basting. Knead until smooth and then let it rest for 10 minutes.

3. Place dough in greased 8 or 9 inch round or square pan. Pierce the top of the dough a few times with a fork.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 - 25 minutes or until golden.

5. Remove from oven and baste top of bread with remaining milk. Return to oven and allow to bake for 5 more minutes. Remove fro oven and allow to cool for a few minutes. Can be serve while hot or cold but hot is better!

Serve hot with butter and cheese and boiled fish or souse
