1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter
2 eggs
3½ cups flour sifted with spices
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 teaspoons cinnamon
½ teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon allspice
1 cup pitted prunes
1 cup water
1 teaspoon soda

Directions:

Cream sugar and butter. Add eggs and mix with mixer. Add vanilla and mix. Sift flour with the spices and salt -- add incrementally to the batter and mix with mixer. Heat prunes with water over medium heat until hot and bubbly. Remove from heat and add soda. Blend the prune mixture with the rest of the better using the mixer on low. Place in greased and floured bundt pan and bake at 350ºF for 1 hour.

A version of this recipe was given to Jamie Stamper by her mother, Mary Ann Mallard, in 1986. Mary Ann made this cake for her husband, Jim, many years for his birthday. The cake was a favorite of Jim's father, James W. Mallard, Sr. Jamie modified the recipe to include both white and brown sugar, replaced the shortening with butter, and increased the spice quantity.
