2 pkg yeast
½ cup warm water
2 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp salt
3-4 Tbsp lard, softened
2 cups water
6 ½ - 7 cups flour
Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in warm water with sugar. Add remaining water, salt and lard. Mix in flour one to two cups at a time, kneading in the last. Knead 5-7 minutes to form moderately stiff dough. Let dough rise till double; punch down and let rise again. Punch down and form into loaves. Place on greased baking pan or cookie sheet; make diagonal cuts across loaves. Allow to rise until double again.
Bake at 375° for 45 minutes or until golden brown and makes a hollow sound when thumped. Remove from oven and brush with lard.

I'm not sure I remember ever having store bought bread at Grandma & Grandpa Frerking's. Grandma made bread at least one day a week and it was always a treat to have a piece of bread with her strawberry Jam. Oh, and my aunts, Velva and Nadine told me that I couldn't get married until I was able to slice a loaf of grandma's bread without it being all cattywompus.
