1 c shortening
1¼ c sugar
1 tsp vanilla
3 eggs, separated
1 c cold water
⅓ c tomato paste
2½ c cake flour
½ c dry cocoa
1½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt

Directions:
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350º.
2. In mixing bowl, beat egg whites until they are stiff.
3. In separate bowl, cream shortening and sugar together then add egg yolks, water, vanilla, tomato paste.
4. Mix well then fold in stiff egg whites.
5. Mix together all dry ingredients in separate bowl.
6. Mix wet and dry ingredients together.
7. Bake in 2 greased and floured 8½ inch round pans for 35 to 40 minutes.

Cover with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting (see Sauces and Toppings section for recipe).
