3/4 cup shortening
2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
3 cups, minus 2 T. flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cloves
1 tsp nutmeg
2 tsp cinnamon
2 cups applesauce
1 cup raisins
1 1/2 cups chopped dates
2 cups chopped pecans

Directions:

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs.
Sift together dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with applesauce, beating after each addition. (Depending on the moistness of the applesauce, you may use 1/4-1/2 cup milk if batter seems too stiff.) Stir in fruit and pecans.
Bake in greased and floured 10" tube pan at 350ºF for 1 1/2 hours or until done.

Ione Schroeder Steichen also had this recipe, using an angel food cake pan. Evelyn remembers getting jars of applesauce from the cellar for Grandma Anna. (I loved her home canned applesauce!)
