Directions:1. Combine milk (or water), sugar and yeast in med size bowl. Let sit 5 minutes to start bubbling. 2. Add egg, softened marg (or oil) and salt. Mix. 3. Add flour-1 cup at a time mixing with each addition. 4. Dump out onto counter and knead about 5 minutes. Use more flour if needed. 5. Set into lightly greased bowl and cover with tea towel. Let rise in warm place until doubled in size. 6. Punch down. Roll out on floured counter until about ½ inch thick. 7. Cut out donut. Set on floured cook sheet and let rise. Make ball with leftover scraps and roll out again. Continue until dough is all used. Will make 12-15 donuts depending on size. 8. Let donuts rise about 30 minutes. 9. Heat oil in deep frying pan or heavy pot. Drop one donut carefully in hot oil. If oil is hot enough, edges of donut will start bubbling immediately. 10. Add more donuts. Turn over when golden on one side. Should take about 3 minutes to cook. If donuts are browning too quickly, turn heat down. 11. Set donuts on cooling rack. 12. Donuts can be iced or dipped in dry icing sugar like Grama made or dipped in mixture of white sugar and cinnamon. Wait until donuts are lukewarm to dip. |
