½ c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg
½ tsp vanilla
1 ¾ c. flour
½ tsp. baking soda
¼ tsp. salt

Filling:
¾ lb. moist, pitted dates, cut up
⅓ c. sugar
⅓ c. water
½ c. nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla. Gradually stir in dry ingredients. Set aside. Mix date filling by cooking dates, sugar, and water in a sauce pan until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in nuts. Let cool. Roll dough into 2 rectangles and spread with date filling. Roll tightly. Pinch edges to seal. Wrap each roll in waxed paper. Chill for several hours. Cut into ¼ inch slices. Place on slightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 350º for 8-10 minutes.
