c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg
tsp vanilla
1 c. flour
tsp. baking soda
tsp. salt

Filling:
lb. moist, pitted dates, cut up
⅓ c. sugar
⅓ c. water
c. nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla. Gradually stir in dry ingredients. Set aside. Mix date filling by cooking dates, sugar, and water in a sauce pan until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in nuts. Let cool. Roll dough into 2 rectangles and spread with date filling. Roll tightly. Pinch edges to seal. Wrap each roll in waxed paper. Chill for several hours. Cut into inch slices. Place on slightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.
