1 c. flour
¼ tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
½ c. sugar
¼ c. shortening
½ c. milk
½ tsp. vanilla
2 c. pitted cherries
¼ - ½ c. sugar
1 c. hot water or cherry juice

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375º. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and the first ½ c. sugar into a bowl. Add shortening, milk, and vanilla. Beat vigorously with spoon or electric mixer 2 minutes. Pour into greased 6 x 10 inch pan. Cover with cherries, then sprinkle with sugar. Over this, pour the hot liquid. Bake in moderately hot oven about 40 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
