Cake:
2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
¾ tsp soda
¾ tsp ground cloves
¾ tsp ground cinnamon
⅔ c. shortening
¾ c. brown sugar
1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
3 eggs

Penuche Frosting:
½ c butter or margarine
1 c brown sugar
¼ hot milk
3¼ c powdered sugar

Cake:
Mix together first seven ingredients. Add shortening, brown sugar, and buttermilk. Mix till all flour is moistened. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Add eggs and beat 2 minutes more. Bake in 2 greased and lightly floured 9x1½-inch round pans at 350º for 30-35 minutes or till done. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans.

Penuche Frosting:
Melt butter or margarine; add brown sugar. Bring to boiling; cook and stir 1 minute or till slightly thick. Cool 15 minutes. Add hot milk and beat smooth. Bet in enough powdered sugar for spreading consistency.
