3 tbls butter or olive oil
2 lrg onions-chopped
3 cloves garlic-minced
1 lb ground beef
3 cups water
1 1/3 cups canned tomatoes
1 green pepper-chopped
1/2 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper, or less
1 tsp cumin
1 small bay leaf
3 tbls chili powder
1/4 tsp basil
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Heat butter or olive oil in skillet
Add onion and garlic and sauce until golden brown
Add meat and brown
Transfer meat mixture to large sauce pan and add remaining ingredients
Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer uncovered until sauce is as thick as desired or about 3 hours

If desired: add a 16 oz can kidney beans just before serving.
