1 C. soft shortening (half butter)
1 C. sifted confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 Tsp. almond flavoring
1 Tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 C. sifted flour
1 Tsp. salt
1/2 Tsp. red food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 375 deg. (quick moderate). Cream together the shortening, butter, egg, almond flavoring, vanilla. Mix flour and salt and mix into the creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Blend red food color into one half. Roll 1 Tsp. each color dough on lightly floured board into a strip about 4" long. Place strips side by side, press lightly together and twist like a rope. Put on ungreased baking sheet. Curve top down for handle of cane. Repeat till all dough is used. Bake 9 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from pan while still warm, sprinkle with mixture of 1/2 C. crushed peppermint stick candy and 1/2 C. sugar. Makes about dozen.
