1 cup shortening
2 cups brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
1/2 cup water, sour milk or buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
3 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
2 cups dates
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix well shortening, brown sugar and eggs. Stir in sour milk and vanilla. Sift together flour, salt, baking soda and cinnamon.

Cook dates in water till thick. Add sugar and nuts.
