This recipe if from Wendy Hirschmann. When I tasted these I had to have the recipe. As she put it...the recipe is "my mama's and her mama's".
Best of it's kind!
Here it is.

1 3/4 cups rolled oats (Quaker)
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp salt
1 small tsp.( 3/4 tsp) baking soda
3/4 cup butter

FILLING:

1 lb. dates
1 cup boiling water
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. fresh lemon juice

Preheat oven to 350º F. Grease/butter a 10-inch square pan.

In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, salt, brown sugar and baking soda. Mix in the butter until crumbly. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of the 10-inch square baking pan.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine dates, water and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, and cook until thickened. Remove from the heat and squeeze in a few drops of fresh lemon juice. Cool slightly.

Spread the filling over the base in the 10-inch baking pan, then sprinkle the rest of the crumb mixture over the top.

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until top is lightly golden.
Cool before cutting into squares.
