1 cup Spry (this is an old shortening brand)
1 ½ cups sugar
2 eggs beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
5 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon salt
¾ teaspoon baking soda
3 ½ cups flour

2 cups dates chopped
¾ cup chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 375º.
Cream shortening, sugar, vanilla.
Add eggs, and milk to creamed mixture and blend.
Sift dry ingredients and add to the creamed mixture.
Add dates and nuts.
Roll into cookie size balls.

Bake at 375º for 12 - 15 minutes .

There is a note "May have to mash with a fork."
I think it means that if these cookies don't spread out like chocolate chip cookies do when baked that you have to press them with a fork like you do with peanut butter cookies before baking.
So, try a few with the balls of dough to see if they spread when baked.
If they don't spread, put a batch in by pressing the dough down with a fork before baked.
I remember Grandma Lattin had these in the house a lot and they are moist and delicious.
