1/2 c butter or margarine, softened
1 ½ cups sugar
2 ½ c sifted all-purpose flour
3 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
½ cup milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
6 egg whites
¼ teaspoon cream of tartar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter thoroughly; gradually add sugar, cream together thoroughly.
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix well after each addition (the mixture will be stiff). Stir in extract.
Beat egg whites (at room temperature) until foamy; add cream of tartar, and beat until stiff peaks form. Fold into creamed mixture.
Pour batter into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Bake at 325° for 1 hour and 30 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool in pan 10 to 15 minutes; remove from pan, and let cool completely.
