1 tsp. baking soda
1 C. boiling water
1 tsp. baking powder
2 Tbsp. butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 C. chopped dates
1 3/4 C. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 C. sugar
2/3 C. chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Sprinkle soda on dates; add boiling water and let stand about 10 minutes. Sift flour, measure; add baking powder and salt; sift again. Cream butter; add sugar gradually and blend together well. Stir in egg and sifted ingredients alternately with date mixture, stirring well. Add nuts and vanilla. Put in greased loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes at 325º. Let stand 24 hours before cutting.
