6 cups old fashioned oats
4 cups packed brown sugar
6 cups ap flour
1T baking soda
3 cups butter


Filling
2 lbs dates
2 cups brown sugar
4 cups water
1/4 cups lemon juice

Directions:
Directions:

Mix all the dry ingredients. Melt the butter and mix into the dry till well mixed. Pat 1/2 the crumb mix lightly into the big cookie sheet ( 17" X 13" ) that is lined with parchment.
Combine all the filling ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil and heat till thick and creamy. Then pour over the crumb mix in the cookie sheet,
Crumble remaining crumb mix over top of dates, spread evenly and pat lightly
Put in preheated 350º oven for 30 to 35 minutes, till lightly browned.
Cut when cool so they do not crumble too much.

In our house I usually made these for the church when they called for food (because it called for ingredients usually on hand) for a funeral. Thus Megan used to call them "Funeral Squares"
