1 C. NUTS
½ CUP GRANULATED SUGAR
½ CUP WATER
2 CUPS BROWN SUGAR
1 TSP. VANILLA
3 EGGS
1 TSP. SODA
1 TSP. BAKING POWDER
1 TSP. SALT
4 CUPS FLOUR

IN MEDIUM SAUCEPAN, COOK DATES, SUGAR AND WATER UNTIL THICK. ADD NUTS AND COOL BEFORE PREPARING DOUGH.

CREAM SHORTENING AND BROWN SUGAR UNTIL FLUFFY. ADD EGGS AND VANILLA. MIX WELL. ADD DRY INGREDIENTS AND COMBINE. ON FLOURED BOARD, ROLL DOUGH INTO A RECTANGLE ABOUT ¼" THICK. CAREFULLY SPREAD ON DATE MIXTURE. ROLL AS FOR CINNAMON ROLLS. CHILL FOR 4 HOURS OR OVERNIGHT. WITH SHARP KNIFE, CUT INTO ¼" SLICES. BAKE ON GREASED COOKIE SHEET FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES OR UNTIL THEY BEGIN TO TURN GOLDEN.
