1 ½ CUPS SIFTED FLOUR
1 ½ TSP. BAKING POWDER
¼ TSP. SALT
¾ CUP SUGAR
¼ CUP SHORTENING
1 EGG
½ CUP PLUS 2 TBSP. MILK
1 TSP. VANILLA
TOPPING: ½ CUP BROWN SUGAR, FIRMLY PACKED
2 TBSP. FLOUR
2 TSP. CINNAMON
½ CUP CHOPPED NUTS
2 TBSP MELTED BUTTER OR MARGARINE

MIX TOGETHER SUGAR, FLOUR, CINNAMON AND NUTS. BLEND IN BUTTER OR MARGARINE.

SIFT FLOUR, THEN MEASURE. ADD BAKING POWDER, SALT AND SUGAR TO FLOUR AND SIFT INTO MEDIUM-SIZED MIXING BOWL. USING PASTRY CUTTER, CUT SHORTENING INTO FLOUR UNTIL MIXTURE RESEMBLES COARSE MEAL. SET ASIDE.
BEAT EGGS WITH ROTARY BEATER UNTIL FOAMY. STIR IN MILK AND VANILLA. ADD EGG AND MILK MIXTURE TO DRY INGREDIENTS AND BLEND. POUR HALF THE BATTER INTO GREASED 8X8” PAN. SPREAD EVENLY. SPRINKLE WITH HALF THE TOPPING.
POUR REMAINING BATTER INTO PAN, SPREAD AND SPRINKLE WITH REMAINING TOPPING. BAKE FOR 30 TO 35 MINUTES OR UNTIL TOOTHPICK INSERTED IN CENTER COMES OUT CLEAN.
