⅔ cup sugar
¼ cup shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1½ cup flour
½ cup milk
2 teaspoon baking powder

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar, add egg, add flavoring, beat. Sift flour, measure and sift flour, salt and baking powder, add milk and beat. Cover the bottom of a pan with waxed paper, cover with 2 tablespoons melted butter,½ cup brown sugar and a layer of slices of well-drained pineapple or other fruit, cover with cake batter.
Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees) for 30 minutes.
