3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup Brer Rabbit Molasses*
1 egg
2 cups sifted all purpose flour

2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. salt

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together shortening and sugar. Add molasses and egg. Beat well. Sift together rest if ingredients and add to first mixture. Chill for at least an hour (or overnight) Form into small balls and roll in sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet two inches apart. Bake at 375º for 8-10 minutes.

I made these cookies each year at Christmas with my Aunt Jane. I stayed for the weekend and we baked all day Saturday. We made these cookies, butter cookies and Butterscotch Thins (which I never liked) and stored in huge Dutch Boy Pretzel tins. * I don't think they make Brer Rabbit Molasses any more (Its a very old recipe) so any Molasses will do.
