3/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts are best)
1 cup chopped dates
1 and 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup shortening. (Crisco)
3//4 cup boiling water

2 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 cup sugar
1 and 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350º
Grease a loaf pan (8 1/2 inch)

Combine the nuts, dates, soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the shortening and boiling water.
Allow this mixture to stand for 15 minutes.
Stir to blend.

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs slightly and add vanilla. Stir in the sugar and flour.
Add to date mixture. DO NOT OVERMIX.

Pour into the greased loaf pan. Bake about one hour-- checking with toothpick for done-ness.
Cool on wire rack for 10-12 minutes, then turn bread out to finish cooling upside-down.

This si a moist bread, very much like the one our mother used to make often.
