1 egg, well beaten
1/2 cup lard*
1/2 cup sour milk**
2 squares unsweetened chocolate (melted)
1 heaping tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt
vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup nutmeats

Be sure baking powder, baking soda and salt are added to flour.

*modernize recipe by using shortening, stick margarine or butter.
**Buttermilk is the substitute for sour milk. If you do not have buttermilk, make a substitute by using 1 cup milk plus 1 3/4 tsp cream of tarter OR 1/4 cup milk plus 3/4 cup plain yogurt OR 1/4 milk plus 3/4 cup plain sour cream. Remember this recipe only calls for 1/2 cup of Soured Milk.
