1 1/2 c. dates, chopped
1 1/2 c. boiling water
2 T. shortening
1 1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 c. chopped nuts (recommend walnuts)

Directions:
Directions:
Pour water over dates, shortening, sugar and salt. Sift flour and baking soda together.
Add eggs and vanilla to first mixture. Then add dry ingredients. Add nuts. Bake in one 4 x 8 x 2 1/2-inch loaf pan, greased, or two mini-loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Hints: Keeps well when foil-wrapped. May be frozen

Cut this out of a Sunday paper, when lived in St. Petersburg many years ago. Recipe is yellow with age but still a good one. Great Christmas bread recipe.
