1/2 lb. dates(cut up)
1/2 c. wh. sugar
1 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. hot water
1 3/4 c. flour
2 eggs beaten
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. soda
14 slices orange candy
1 T. hot water
1 c. br. sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º F, well greased 9" x 13"pan.
Boil cut dates, wh. sugar & water until dates are soft. Thicken with 2 T. flour. Cut orange slices into small pieces, add to cooled date mixture. Mix remaining ingredients together & spread 1/2 into prepared pan, pour fruit on batter & spread, pour rest of batter on & bake until light brown.
