4-6 apples, depending upon the size
3 tbsp. sugar
nutmeg

Batter: 2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt (or salt substitute)
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/3 c. Crisco shortening
1 c. milk

Hard Sauce:
2 c. water
1/4 c. sugar
rind of either a lemon or orange
corn starch

Butter the bottom of a 9 x 9 inch baking pan. Peel and slice the apples. Fill the bottom of the baking pan with the sliced apples, approximately 1 1/2 inches thick.

In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar and Crisco together. Add the egg, milk, baking powder, salt, and flour. Stir well to blend all the ingredients. Place this mixture over the apples in the baking pan.

Bake at 300º for one hour or until the cake is light to medium brown. Cut and serve with hard sauce.

For the hard sauce, blend the hard sauce ingredients together in a saucepan. Thicken with corn starch and add a piece of butter the size of a walnut. Sprinkle with nutmeg is desired.

This was Grandma's mother-in-law's recipe and dates back to the mid-1800's. Of course there was no Crisco, so they used the shortening of the time.
